I think because of the nature of human beings everyone is selfish they need some incentive to do innovation. And I think the Pharma industry is special its not the same as other industry because P it is related to people’s life – maybe I think the patent could be covered by the govt. For China its not realistic because there’s too many peoples. So at current stage china government encourage the company to produce the cheaper drugs – but I dont know whether this is effective because the quality of the generic drugs cannot be practiced now….we will see maybe 5 year or 10 years later.

The problem for China’s healthcare industry is there are too many patient and there are little doctors and hospitals and people all go to the big cities looking for the good hospitals and doctors.

Vocabulary

the cost is not borne by the patient / this means the patient doesn’t personally pay for the service it is paid by a 3rd party like an insurance company

small town mentality / this is small thinking from people who have lived in a small town their who life

mental / an adjective that describes the mind or the brain or a way of thinking

e.g. Mental health is sometimes more important than physical health.

placebo / fake medicine that is given to patients during experiments and they will tell the patient that it is a new medicine but really its not its actually just a sugar pill – they want to test if new medicines are effective (if they work well) and you test this by giving 50% of the people the new drug and 50% of the people a placebo drug and you dont tell them which is which.

placebo effect / even though someone received the sugar fake pill their health still improved…and thats because their mind or their mental ability told themselves that they would get well soon and they tricked themselves into believing it…this is the power of the mind.

drugs / can be legal or illegal

medicine / is legalized drugs from a doctor – always legal, never illegal, unless you use too much or use them without a doctor’s permission

e.g. Morphine is heroin (ya pian).

[to have = to possess]

[to incur] / to take on the cost, to take on the responsibility, to carry the cost or to carry responsibility

e.g. Who will incur this cost? How will pay the price?

Pronunciation

patent / PAT-TINT / NOT PAY-TINT

drugs / DRUHHHGS

Grammar

You can say and should say THE GOVERNMENT (The Chinese government).

But otherwise, you should eliminate THE all together. Just stop saying it. 🙂

Speaking exercise

First I think the prices will be lower decrease because the government has taken action to make the price lower them – for the drugs the most of the price costs are for from the patent process  and currently the govt encouraged the father  pharma companies to make the generic drugs its not the to develop new, innovative drugs and the prices for the generic drugs are much lower than the originally newer, innovative drugs. Yes, because for example for the new drugs the patient patent maybe lasts only 10 to 20 years or 10 years and after this period other pharma companies can produce the similar drugs and the government encourages this. But before the generic drugs go public they need to conduct the a consistency evaluation to check for the quality, and submit the this evaluation to the regulators, after the approval of things the generic drugs can be sold.

Do Did you see a popular movie last year called a Chinese one – This is about a drugs for the cancer but its very expensive and a lot of patients cannot afford it this one – but one person he has had/[possessed] the a channel to import the drugs from India because in India they dont didn’t have patent laws for the drug so this drug is was sold very cheaply in India. This is just like the story you told – I think the patents for the drugs are very tricky – from my perspective, I think a patents is are necessary – if you dont have patents for the drugs no one will take the effort and time necessary nor incur the and costs to develop the new drugs.
