Vocabulary

original / originally / what I wanted to do the first time / the first / can show people how your thoughts have changed

e.g. Originally I went to school for history, but then I changed to business.

e.g. My original plan was to go medical school, but then I decided to go to engineering school.

e.g. I originally thought that drug dealers shouldn’t die but then April helped me change my mind.

e.g. In my friend’s original state she is very sleepy, but then she drinks 3 cups of coffee, and she’s suddenly hyper (crazy).

**When we add a VERB to an “originally sentence” we should use the PAST TENSE of the verb.

a state (of being) / a state of mind / how you feel or how you are thinking

e.g. When I spoke to April, she was in a great state of mind — she was thinking great, she was in a good mood.

e.g. My grandmother last year was in a very bad state — her health was bad.

overdose / you took too much medicine or you took too much illegal drugs and it made you sick or it killed you

e.g. Many Americans die by drug overdose every year.

addictive上瘾 / if you try it once, you will try it again, and you will always want it

e.g. Drugs are very addictive. Cigarettes are also very addictive.

prostitutes / prostitution å–æ·« / when a woman sells her body for money

e.g. In China, prostitution is illegal.

e.g. April thinks that young women should try and find another job, not become a prostitute.

responsible è´Ÿè´£ vs. irresponsible 负责任 / you do what you should do, you do what you are supposed to do vs. you don’t do what you are supposed to do

e.g. I am a responsible employee; I work at the time my boss says I should work.

e.g. April is irresponsible because she does not listen to her boss.

e.g. Being a prostitute is irresponsible because you could go to jail and never see your family again.

political / an adjective describing anything about government — this could be ideas, this could be news

e.g. Today April and Nick had a political discussion.

e.g. Nick is a political person.

politician / this is a political person, this is a government person

e.g. President Xi is a great politician.

politics / the subject or topic about government

e.g. April attended a politics class in class.

e.g. I’m interested in sports, but April is more interested in politics.

e.g. Politicians (person) are always thinking politically (describing of how they are thinking) about politics (noun).
