Editor’s note: Many Chinese schools have started the new semester by adopting online platforms to take classes amid the novel coronavirus outbreak. Will online education replace traditional schools? Readers share their opinions.
Though I am not sure whether online courses can replace traditional education in the future, I reckon, at least for now, schooling provides more for students than studying via internet. In the long-run of their development, besides knowledge, youngsters are required to participate in various activities with classmates and teachers to accumulate first-hand experience, which is a fundamental basis for them to handle practical problems and to acquire social skills when leaving school. That’s what the trendy way of teaching cannot offer.
How can you learn subjects such as chemistry without being able to safely use the laboratory equipment and chemicals under the direct, hands-on guidance of an expert teacher ? How can you learn how to use a language in face-to-face situations using aspects such as a gesture, facial expression, body posture, tone of voice solely via a computer ? How can you learn extra-curricular or hidden curricular behaviors and attitudes, such as being with your classmates, playing games with them, learning discipline and order from your teachers if the student is stuck behind a computer monitor ? How can you learn how to cook if you don’t have a stove ?
You cannot learn how to live life simply by sitting in front of a computer rather than ever taking part of being a community member in the ‘big, bad world’ beyond the screen.
