Last week, the Ukraine government announced a new legal provision which is about official language in Ukraine. The new provision is all people should use Ukrainian to replace Russian as the official language in public area like supermarket, café, bank, pharmacy, library and gas station, otherwise you will be gotten the punishment. For lots of Ukraine, before the collapse of the Soviet Union, they were educated in Russian and had gotten used to use Russia as key communicated language. According to the research, only 67.5% Ukrainian speak Ukrainian as their mother language as well as 35% use Russian as their mother language, therefore it means Ukraine has
been a stable bilingual country with Ukrainian and Russian in past 30 years, and it made me curious why Ukraine gave up Russian after 30 years. After checking information from website, I found the reason about it in that Russia has always been the biggest threat to Ukraine’s independence, and the typical example was in the year of 2014, Ukraine experienced a “ independence crisis†and more than 96% Ukrainian supported to rejoin Russia, so it made the Ukraine government realized that reduced the impact from Russian is quite important for the citizen. But how to change the habit of lots of citizen? I think this is a challenge, let’s wait and see what will happen together.
