F2F Class Notes (Whitney)

Next Class Focus

Review these answers orally and iron out any speech-related kinks. Work on some “quick fire” style questions that challenge Carolyn to think spontaneously to help her prepare for any unexpected interview questions.

Preparing for an upcoming job interview in English: Practise the following responses aloud with a partner or in the mirror. Recording and playing them back will also help with memorising the answers naturally.

  1. Name three strengths and three weaknesses:
  • STRENGTHS
  • Communication: The processes involved in my previous projects, especially for purchasing, are often complicated. I find that one of my major strengths is my ability to communicate with my team members and clients. For example, I previously came across a Head of Department personnel that thought that our software was not suitable for their project. I made an effort to learn more about his requirements and used this knowledge to persuade him to take our software on. I am able to communicate my thoughts and processes clearly and convincingly.
  • Building Team Dynamics: Within a stressful work environment, I seek to create harmony within the team.  Even when we’re facing a lot of pressure as a team, my goal is to keep the work mood light-hearted and make everyone feel comfortable so that we may achieve more together.
  • Diligence: I’m detail orientated, particularly with cost controlling and overseeing processes. I like to keep on top of things and make an effect to achieve positive outcomes in everything that I do.
  • WEAKNESSES
  • Time Management: When I have several projects on-the-go, I sometimes struggle to manage low-priority tasks in a timely manner. This is something that I’m aware of and am actively improving.
  • Perfectionist: Whilst I pride myself on my work, sometimes my methods can be too rigorous and this may not be suitable for every project. To manage this, I adapt my working methods to ensure that I can achieve my end goals.
  • SAP Implementation (Software): Whilst this is not a software that I am very experienced with, I have taken the time to familiarise myself with it and will actively work to build on these skills.

2. How did you find out about this job? My husband is actually working in the same company in the Education Software department. He recommended this position to me.

3. Why do you want this job? I’m looking for a challenge to push myself towards a new stage in my career. I feel that I want to gain more work experience and skills that my current position cannot offer. I am excited to work in a more fast-paced and opportunity-filled industry.

4. Are you planning on having children? I currently have two children and don’t intend to have more within the next three to four years.

5. Do you have any questions for us? (Questions Carolyn could ask the interviewer)

  • Is there are software developer in-house currently or does your company predominantly work with vendors and 3rd party providers?
  • How many team members would I be managing in this position?
