scratch the surface – you only know or find out about the things you can see, and not ALL the other things.

eg: We barely scratched the surface studying English grammar. There is so much more to study, but that’s only important for people like lawyers.

dive in

eg: Just dive in, don’t stick your toe in the water to test it.  (Just start reading a lot of stuff in the book, don’t give up. Don’t  try just a little)

out of your league – above your level, or too good for you

eg: That girl is out of his league. She is the daughter of Barrack Obama.

punching above your weight – (comes from Boxing) where weight classes are used to separate fighters.

eg: If a boxer fights someone above his weight class, we say he is punching above his weight.

eg: Look at Dan and that girl he is with. Wow, he is really punching above his weight. How did he meet such a beautiful girl?

eg: A Chinese company tried to sue Apple. I think they might be punching above their weight by trying to take on Apple.

sue (V) – to hire a lawyer and try to win a court case and make someone pay you for something

eg: He threatened to sue them.But they had great lawyers, so they ignored him.

Kilogram (Kilos) – Gong Jin

eg: In China we usually measure everything in half kilos. We call it, Jin. Where a full kilo is called Gong Jin.

scale – a device to measure weight

eg: Do you have a scale so we can weigh this?

cashier – the person who is taking money at a store

eg: That cashier at family mart gave me the wrong amount of change.

market – smaller store, sells less kinds of things

eg: I like the vegetable market, because it’s a lot cheaper and usually has fresh stuff.

farmer’s market – local market, usually for things from the farm, like veggies, fruits, even cheeses and milk

eg: If you go to America you must check out a farmer’s market.

supermarket – big store, sells all kinds of things

eg: I need to pick up some stuff at the supermarket
