Winter Solstice Festival

The Winter Solstice Festival is an important traditional celebration of the 24th solar term. People eat dumplings to celebrate it in northern China, while southerners eat sweet meatball soup.

When I lived with my family, we ate dumplings during that festival, but since I’ve been working in Shanghai for the past 5 years and I haven’t been back home to celebrate with them, I try to do it with my friends instead.
I asked my mum about this festival, and she told me it marks the end of the year, and means that the Spring Festival is coming, and we will get older. When it comes to the story behind this festival, she told me that a long time ago, a doctor who worked for the government quit his job and was on his way back hometown, when he saw some poor, hungry people by the road with chilblain on their ears.
He wanted to help them by  feeding and curing them, so he cooked mutton soup with traditional Chinese medicine and, and the food looked like ears. We now call them dumplings.
