Vocabulary

Tutor (n): 1- a teacher who teaches a child outside of school, especially in order to give the child extra help with a subject they find difficult.
E.g.: His parents got him a tutor to help with his maths.

Scholar (n): 1- a person who studies a subject in great detail, especially at a university.
E.g.: Dr Miles was a distinguished scholar of Russian history.

Consensus (n): 1- a generally accepted opinion or decision among a group of people.
E.g.: The general consensus in the office is that he can’t do his job.

Brainwash (v): 1- to make someone believe something by repeatedly telling them that it is true and preventing any other information from reaching them.
E.g.: Their government is trying to brainwash them into thinking that war cannot be avoided.

Colony (n): 1- a country or area controlled politically by a more powerful country that is often far away.
E.g.: Australia and New Zealand are former British colonies.

Corruption (n): 1- dishonestly using your position or power to get an advantage, especially for money.
E.g.: Both companies are under investigation for corrupt practices.
E.g.: The whole system was corrupt – every official she approached wanted money before helping her.

Politician (n): 1- a member of a government or law-making organization.
E.g.: She believed her job as a politician was to represent the views of her party and the people who voted for her.

Comfort Zone (n): 1- a situation in which you feel comfortable and in which your ability and determination are not being tested.
E.g.: Rock climbing pushes many people beyond their comfort zones.
