Vocabulary

Stare (v): 1-  to look for a long time with the eyes wide open, especially when surprised, frightened, or thinking:
E.g.: Don’t stare at people like that, it’s rude.
E.g.: He sat quietly for hours staring into the distance, thinking of what might have been.

Offense (n): 1- an illegal act; a crime. 2- upset and hurt or annoyed feelings, often because someone has been rude or shown no respect:
E.g.: Driving without a license is an offense.
E.g.: He committed several serious offenses.
E.g.: I really didn’t mean (to cause/give) any offense (= did not intend to upset anyone) – I was just stating my opinion.
E.g.: Do you think he took offense (= was upset) at what I said about his hair?

No offense (intended): 1- used when you say something that might upset or annoy someone.
E.g.: No offense, but I find your sister a little rude.
E.g.: If you don’t mind, I’d rather go on my own – no offense intended, but I think it would be better.

Offend (v): 1- to make someone upset or angry.
E.g.: I think she was offended that she hadn’t been invited to the party.
E.g.: He looked offended when you called him middle-aged.

Offensive (adj): 1-causing offence.
E.g.: This programme contains language that some viewers might find offensive.
E.g.: He told some really offensive sexist jokes.

Sexist (adj): 1- suggesting that the members of one sex (mainly women) are less able, intelligent, etc. than the members of the other sex, or referring to that sex’s bodies, behaviour, or feelings in a negative way.
E.g.: Sexist comments
E.g.: She described her former boss as an old-fashioned sexist pig.
E.g.: Women are often the subject of sexist jokes.

Podcast (n): 1- a radio program that you can listen to on the internet.
E.g.: I listened to a great podcast on Chinese history last night.


Describing something that isn’t special, or that is just normal: The usual / Nothing special / An average / normal day
