Vocabulary

Breed (v): 1- to keep animals for the purpose of producing young animals in a controlled way.
E.g.: Some dogs are bred for their fighting instincts.
E.g.: His main income comes from breeding cattle.

Shelter (n): 1- (a building designed to give) protection from bad weather, danger, or attack.
E.g.: They opened a shelter to provide temporary housing for the city’s homeless.
E.g.: The trees gave/provided some shelter from the rain.

Predator (n): 1- an animal that hunts, kills, and eats other animals.
E.g.: Lions, wolves, and other predators live in these lands.
E.g.: Cats are natural predators, which may affect their behavior as pets.

Grumpy (adj): 1-  easily annoyed and complaining.
E.g.: I hadn’t had enough sleep and was feeling kind of grumpy.
E.g.:  He’s just a grumpy old man, don’t be offended by what he’s saying.

Hierarchy (n): 1- a system in which people or things are arranged according to their importance.
E.g.: Some monkeys have a very complex social hierarchy.
E.g.: He rose quickly through the political hierarchy to become party leader.

Anxiety (n): 1- an uncomfortable feeling of nervousness or worry about something that is happening or might happen in the future. (adj: Anxious)
E.g.: Children normally feel a lot of anxiety about their first day at school.
E.g.: That explains his anxiety over his health.
E.g.: Her son is a source of considerable anxiety.
E.g.: My mother always gets a bit anxious if we don’t arrive when we say we will.
E.g.: I saw my sister’s anxious face at the window.
E.g.: It’s natural that you should feel anxious when you first leave home.

Contradiction (n): 1- the fact of something being the complete opposite of something else or very different from something else, so that one of them must be wrong.
E.g.: You say that you’re good friends and yet you don’t trust him. Isn’t that a contradiction?
