Vocabulary

Civil Rights (n): 1-  the rights that each person has in a society, whatever their race, sex, or religion.
E.g.: Civil rights include freedom, equality in law and in employment, and the right to vote.

Segregation (n): 1- a system that keeps one group of people apart from another and treat them differently, especially because of race or sex.
E.g.: The system of racial segregation that used to exist in South Africa was called apartheid.

Civil War (n): 1- a war fought by different groups of people living in the same country.
E.g.: The Spanish Civil War lasted from 1936 to 1939.

Secular (adj): 1- not having any connection with religion.
E.g.: We live in an increasingly secular society, in which religion has less and less influence on our daily lives.

Mediocre (adj): 1- not very good; average.
E.g.: The film’s plot is predictable and the acting is mediocre.
E.g.: Parents don’t want their children going to mediocre schools.

Crash Course (n): 1- a course that teaches you a lot of basic facts in a very short time:
E.g.: I did/took a crash course in French before my trip to Paris.
