Vocabulary

Allergy (n): 1- a condition that makes a person become sick or develop skin or breathing problems because they have eaten certain foods or been near certain substances. 2- 过敏 (adj: Allergic)
E.g.: I have no food allergies.
E.g.: I’m allergic to cat hair.

Religion (n): 1- the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or any such system of belief and worship. 2- 宗教
E.g.: He follows the Christian (基督教) religion.

Acceptable (adj): 1- satisfactory and able to be agreed to or approved of. (≠ Unacceptable)
E.g.: Clearly we need to come to an arrangement that is acceptable to both parties.
E.g.: So what is an acceptable level of radiation?
E.g.: This kind of attitude is simply not acceptable.

Sweat (n/v): 1- the clear, salty liquid that you pass through your skin.
E.g.: The dancers were dripping with/pouring with sweat after a morning’s rehearsal.
E.g.: By the time we’d climbed to the top of the hill, we were covered in sweat.
E.g.: She wiped the sweat from her forehead.

Afford (v): 1- to be able to buy or do something because you have enough money or time.
E.g.: I don’t know how he can afford a new car on his salary.
E.g.: Few people are able to afford cars like that.
E.g.: She couldn’t afford the time off work to see him.
E.g.: I can’t afford to buy a house.

Elevator (n): 1- a device like a box that moves up and down, carrying people or goods from one floor of a building to another.
E.g.: This morning the elevator in my building was broken, so I had to take the stairs.
