Vocabulary
Metropolis (n): 1- a very large city, often the most important city in a large area or country:
E.g.: Soon afterwards he left to begin his career in the metropolis.
E.g.: E.g.: Shanghai has become one of the world’s most important metropolises.
Expat / Expatriate (n): 1- someone who does not live in their own country.
E.g.: A large community of expatriates has settled there.
E.g.: There are many expats living in Shanghai.
Cheesy (adj): 1- Sentimental (感伤) and/or dramatic, yet superficial and unconvincing.
E.g.: This movie is very cheesy.
E.g.: She’s really into cheesy romantic music.
Subtle (adj): 1- small but important. 2- not loud, bright, noticeable, or obvious in any way.
E.g.: There is a subtle difference between these two plans.
E.g.: The room was painted a subtle shade of pink.
E.g.: The play’s message is perhaps too subtle to be understood by young children.
Metaphor (n): 1- an expression, often found in literature, that describes a person or object by referring to something that is considered to have similar characteristics to that person or object.
E.g.: “The mind is an ocean” and “the city is a jungle” are both metaphors.
