Vocabulary

Society (n): 1-  a large group of people who live together in an organized way, making decisions about how to do things and sharing the work that needs to be done. All the people in a country, or in several similar countries, can be referred to as a society.
E.g.: These changes strike at the heart of British/American/modern society.
E.g.: There’s a danger that we will end up blaming innocent children for society’s problems.
E.g.: We must also consider the needs of the younger/older members of society.

Patriarchy (n): 1- a society in which the oldest male is the leader of the family, or a society controlled by men in which they use their power to their own advantage.
E.g.: Patriarchy has not disappeared – it has merely changed form.
E.g.: She rails against patriarchy and hierarchy.
E.g.: Sexism and homophobia can both be attributed to patriarchy.

Sexism (n): 1- (actions based on) the belief that the members of one sex are less intelligent, able, skilful, etc. than the members of the other sex, especially that women are less able than men.
E.g.: The university has been accused of sexism because it has so few women professors.

Harassment (n): 1- behavior that annoys or upsets someone.
E.g.: Attitudes seem to be changing as a result of recent highly publicized (高度宣传) cases of sexual harassment.
E.g.: Allegations of sexual harassment have led to disciplinary proceedings being taken against three naval officers.

Allegation (n): 1-  a statement, made without giving proof, that someone has done something wrong or illegal.
E.g.: Several of her patients have made allegations of professional misconduct (处理不当) against her.
E.g.: Allegations that Mr Dwight was receiving money from known criminals have caused a scandal.
