Vocabulary

Stereotype (n): 1- a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong.
E.g.: He doesn’t conform to fit the national stereotype of a Frenchman.
E.g.: The characters in the book are just stereotypes.

Idealize (v): 1- to think of or represent someone or something as better than that person or thing really is:
E.g.: Why do people idealize their school days?

Charisma (n): 1- a special power that some people have naturally that makes them able to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration.
E.g.: Not only she’s beautiful, but she also has great charisma.

Shortcoming (n): 1- a fault or a failure to reach a particular standard:
E.g.: Whatever his shortcomings as a husband, he was a good father to his children.
E.g.: Like any political system, it has its shortcomings.

Deal breaker (n): 1- A deal breaker is ‘the catch’ that a particular individual cannot overlook and ultimately outweighs any redeeming quality the individual may possess.
E.g.: The deal breaker was that he was married with kids.

Condone (v): 1- to accept or allow behavior that is wrong.
E.g.: If the government is seen to condone violence, the bloodshed will never stop.

Persuade (v): 1- to make someone do or believe something by giving them a good reason to do it or by talking to that person and making them believe it.
E.g.: If she doesn’t want to go, nothing you can say will persuade her.
E.g.: It’s no use trying to persuade him (that) you’re innocent.

Addiction (n): 1- the need or strong desire to do or to have something, or a very strong liking for something. (adj: Addicted)
E.g.: He has an addiction to prescription drugs (处方药).
E.g.: A lot of people nowadays have become addicted to the internet.

Mutual (adj): 1- (of two or more people or groups) feeling the same emotion, or doing the same thing to or for each other.
E.g.: Theirs was a partnership based on mutual respect, trust and understanding.
E.g.: Both countries are acting to their mutual advantage.
E.g.: The agreement was terminated by mutual consent.
