Vocabulary

Background (n): 1- the things that can be seen behind the main things or people in a picture. 2- the conditions that existed before a particular event happened, and that help to explain why it happened:
E.g.: The artist himself did not paint the backgrounds to his pictures – they were done by his pupils.
E.g.: He has photographed her against lots of different backgrounds.
E.g.: These decisions have had to be made against a background of high unemployment.
E.g.: Can you give me some background on (= information about the conditions that existed before) the situation?

Unusual (n): 1- different from others of the same type in a way that is surprising, interesting, or attractive.
E.g.: “Do you like the new couch?” “Yes, it’s very unusual.”
E.g.: It’s unusual to have adult conversation like that with such a young child.
E.g.: I was actually on time, which is unusual for me.

Rash (n): 1- a lot of small red spots on the skin:
E.g.: I’ve got an itchy (发痒的) rash all over my chest.
E.g.: If you stay in the sun too long you’ll get (a) heat rash.

Nutrition (n): 1- the substances (物质) that you take into your body as food and the way that they influence your health. 2- 营养
E.g.: Good nutrition is essential if patients are to make a quick recovery.

Nutrient (n): 1- any substance that plants or animals need in order to live and grow.
E.g.: It’s good soil – full of nutrients.
E.g.: A healthy diet should provide all your essential nutrients.

Rarely (n): 1- not often.
E.g.: We rarely see each other now.
E.g.: I rarely have time to read a newspaper.

Dramatically (adv): 1– suddenly or obviously.
E.g.: Your life changes dramatically when you have a baby to take care of.
E.g.: The economic power of many Asian countries has grown dramatically in recent years.

Awareness (n): 1- knowledge that something exists, or understanding of a situation or subject at the present time based on information or experience. (adj: Aware)
E.g.: Public awareness of the problem will make politicians take it seriously.
E.g.: Environmental awareness (环保意识) has increased dramatically over the past few years.

Decade (n): 1- Air traffic has increased 30% in the last decade.
E.g.: They predict that a large earthquake will happen in the east coast before the end of the decade.
E.g.: Environmental awareness has increased dramatically over the past decade.

Scientist (n): 1- an expert who studies or works in one of the sciences:
E.g.: A couple of decades ago scientists noticed Panama’s climate was slowly growing drier.
E.g.: There are scientists who say that the results of the research are not right.

Earthquake (n): 1- a sudden violent movement of the earth’s surface, sometimes causing great damage. 2- 地震
E.g.: In 1906 an earthquake destroyed much of San Francisco.
