Vocabulary

Daring (adj): 1- brave and taking risks.
E.g.: This is a daring new film (= one willing to risk criticism) by one of our most original modern directors.
E.g.: She was wearing a fairly daring (= short) skirt that barely covered her bottom.

Patriarchal (adj): 1- ruled or controlled by men. (n: Patriarchy)
E.g.: Game of Thrones portraits a very patriarchal society.

Patriarchy (n): 1- a society in which the oldest male is the leader of the family, or a society controlled by men in which they use their power to their own advantage:
E.g.: Patriarchy has not disappeared – it has merely changed form.
E.g.: She rails against patriarchy and hierarchy.
E.g.: Sexism and homophobia can both be attributed to patriarchy.

Take it upon oneself (n): 1- to accept responsibility for something without being asked to.
E.g.: He took it upon himself to personally thank each person at the meeting.

Learned opinion (n): 1- a well-informed opinion. An opinion based on facts, not guesses.
E.g.: I think I’ll call my lawyer to ask for his learned opinion.

Despot (n): 1- a person, especially a ruler, who has unlimited power over other people, and often uses it unfairly and cruelly.
E.g.: He was an evil despot.
E.g.: The king was regarded as having been an enlightened despot. (Enlightened Despotism, also called benevolent despotism, a form of government in the 18th century in which absolute monarchs pursued legal, social, and educational reforms inspired by the Enlightenment.)

Scourge (n/v): 1-  something or someone that causes great suffering or a lot of trouble.
E.g.: Pop-up ads have been described as the scourge of the Internet.
E.g.: The country has been scourged by (= has suffered very much because of) famine in recent years.

Auspicious (adj): 1- suggesting a positive and successful future:
E.g.: They won their first match of the season 5–1 which was an auspicious start.
E.g.: Our first meeting was not auspicious – we had a huge argument.

Roll off the tongue (id): 1- if a word or phrase rolls/trips off the tongue, it is very easy to say
E.g.: The band is called ‘Acquired Echoes’. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

Invincible (adj): 1- impossible to defeat or prevent from doing what is intended:
E.g.: Last year the company seemed/looked invincible but in recent weeks has begun to have problems.

Scurry (v): 1- to move quickly, with small, short steps:
E.g.: The mouse scurried across the floor.
E.g.: The noise of the explosion sent everyone scurrying back into their homes.
