Vocabulary

Private (adj): 1- only for one person or group and not for everyone.
E.g.: She has a small office that is used for private conversations.

Discuss (v): 1- to talk about a subject with someone and tell each other your ideas or opinions (n: Discussion)
E.g.: The police want to discuss these recent racist attacks with local people.
E.g.: The subject is still under discussion (= being considered).

Matter (n): 1- a situation or subject that is being dealt with or considered.
E.g.: Could I talk to you about a personal matter?

Recent (adj): 1- happening or starting from a short time ago.
E.g.: Is that a recent photo?

Racism (n): 1- the belief that people’s qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races. 2- 种族主义 (adj: Racist)
E.g.: The police is trying to fight racism in schools.
E.g.: His comments were very racist and I think that is not acceptable.

Prize (n): 1- something valuable, such as an amount of money, that is given to someone who succeeds in a competition or game or that is given to someone as a reward for doing very good work:
E.g.: The critics’ prize for best film was won by Marc Abbott for “Belly Laugh”.

Increase (v): 1- to (make something) become larger in amount or size.
E.g.: The cost of the project has increased a lot since it began.

Loan (n): 1-  an amount of money that is borrowed, often from a bank, and has to be paid back.
E.g.: She’s trying to get a $50,000 loan to start her own business.

Modern (adj): 1- designed and made using the most recent ideas and methods.
E.g.: We’re in the very modern-looking building opposite the station.

Modernize (v): 1- to make something more modern.
E.g.: Much of the house has been modernized.

Crop (n): 1- a plant such as a grain, fruit, or vegetable grown in large amounts:
E.g.: The main crops grown for export are coffee and rice.

World Food Prize Goes to Nigerian Banker

The president of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, has won the 2017 World Food Prize. Mr Adesina won the prize and $250,000. He got the award for his two decades of work in increasing food production in Africa. He used his experience as a top banker to help agriculture in Africa. He helped to change many farming laws and made it easier for small farmers to get loans for their business. He also helped farmers to modernize their farms and the way they grow their crops. The World Food Prize Foundation President, Kenneth Quinn, said Mr. Adesina won the prize, “for driving change in African agriculture for over 25 years and improving food security for millions across the continent”.
