You are expected to answer if someone asks you…
How are you? How have you been ? How are you doing? Is everything alright? What’s up? What have you been up to?
- How are you?
- I’m fine. I’ve been busy recently. What about you?
- Same old, same old. Nothing new, really.
- Anyway, it’s nice to see you.
- Yeah, you too.
- Well, gotta go. See you around
- See you !
—
- Hey, what’s up? (=now)
- Nothing much, I’m fine. Just watching TV.
–
- What have you been up to? (=recently)
- I’ve been busy / I’ve been running around
“I gotta go” = I got to go = I have to go
You are not expected to answer is someone says…
Nice to see you ! Long time no see. It’s good to see you again. Haven’t seen you for a while!
You only say “How do you do?” to people you meet for the first time. The appropriate answer is “How do you do?”
- My name is Jim. How do you do?
- How do you do? My name’s Ben.
End of a conversation
- Well, it was nice seeing you again
- Yeah, same here
- Hope we can catch up again soon
- Sure, that’d be great
- Okay, gotta go. Let’s keep in touch, ok?
- Yeah, sure. No worries/ No problem
- Cool. See you around !
- See ya ! Take care. Bye bye!
To someone closer
- Okay everyone, I’ll be going. Let’s call it a day. I’ll catch you guys/ladies tomorrow.
- See you all tomorrow
- Cool, have a nice evening!
- You too, see ya
