You are expected to answer if someone asks you…

How are you? How have you been ? How are you doing?  Is everything alright? What’s up? What have you been up to?

  • How are you?
  • I’m fine. I’ve been busy recently. What about you?
  • Same old, same old. Nothing new, really.
  • Anyway, it’s nice to see you.
  • Yeah, you too.
  • Well, gotta go. See you around
  • See you !

  • Hey, what’s up? (=now)
  • Nothing much, I’m fine. Just watching TV.

  • What have you been up to? (=recently)
  • I’ve been busy / I’ve been running around

“I gotta go” = I got to go = I have to go

You are not expected to answer is someone says…

Nice to see you ! Long time no see. It’s good to see you again. Haven’t seen you for a while!

You only say “How do you do?” to people you meet for the first time. The appropriate answer is “How do you do?”

  • My name is Jim. How do you do?
  • How do you do? My name’s Ben.

End of a conversation

  • Well, it was nice seeing you again
  • Yeah, same here
  • Hope we can catch up again soon
  • Sure, that’d be great
  • Okay, gotta go. Let’s keep in touch, ok?
  • Yeah, sure. No worries/ No problem
  • Cool. See you around !
  • See ya ! Take care. Bye bye!

To someone closer

  • Okay everyone, I’ll be going. Let’s call it a day. I’ll catch you guys/ladies tomorrow.
  • See you all tomorrow
  • Cool, have a nice evening!
  • You too, see ya
