Next Class Focus

Continue with writing from last class (see below, it is already marked done).

Vocabulary

Struggle – fighting with yourself
e.g. I really struggled with the decision to sell the house.
Struggle – a physical fight with another person, at close range (like wrestling)
e.g. He tried to escape, but there was a struggle, and he was captured.
Fight – more general, including non-literal uses (the people involved are not actually hitting each other)
e.g. I was fighting with the finance department because they didn’t give us the money they promised.

Grammar

When making a list of things you do, you don’t have to repeat the verb if it is the same one.
e.g. I ate an apple, an orange, and a pear.
e.g. I walked to the market and the park.
— Below, we don’t need to repeat “I have worked” when we talk about the department.
— We don’t need to repeat “I have,” but we do need to change from “worked” to “doing.” We don’t need “been” because “doing” already means that the verb has been repeated.

** . . . though handling different projects
We can still use “I have (been)” in the same way we did for “doing”
** . . . although I have been handling different projects
** . . . although I handle different projects
“Though” connects parts; “although” connects full sentences

If you have two adjectives that apply to the same word, you don’t need to repeat the word.
e.g. I have a long, green, warm coat.
e.g. I have many green and warm coats.

When you use verbs like can, might, will, do, may, could, then you don’t need to use “to” between them and the very they “help.”
e.g. I could sing it for you, but don’t want to.
e.g. I might go with you, but I’m tired.
e.g. I can eat it, but I’m already full.
e.g. I do like this song, but I’ve heard it so many times already.
BUT NOT with verbs like want or like.
e.g. I like to listen to music. (I like listening to music)
e.g. I want to go to the park.

Usually, you begin a new paragraph when you start a new idea, or a new part of long idea. Usually a paragraph is between 3 and maybe 6 or 7 sentences.

“To” is a preposition that indicates movement, motion. So when I say “back up,” it could mean to support, or to move backwards. The way we tell the difference, is whether the verb uses “to.”
e.g. When he had an argument with his brother, I backed him up (I supported him)
e.g. When the delivery arrived, I told them to back the truck up to the side of the building.

Generally, if a verb uses a preposition for meaning (throw out, pick up, pick out), the object goes between the verb and the PREPOSITION.
e.g. I backed him UP.
But, not always: I picked out a green shirt.
Very similar to the use of 了.

Writing exercise

I have worked in my current company for more than 6 years and stay at the same department, do the similar thing although handle the different projects. Sometimes I face the challenges about resource and budget, but I can easily to figure them out, I think I am good at communication and manage my boss. Here I must talk about my manager, who is a gentle man from United States. He is very supporting, understanding and really respect to me. when I need to struggle with other functions to get resource, he will back up to me. Because in a company, we are standing in a different point and with different view, although we have a same mission, vision and valuation.
Unfortunately, our department will be re-organized, my report line will be changed. That is impact on me a lot because I am not sure if other functions will change their manner or still put my projects in a higher priority.
Yesterday, I had a call with the director to discuss about it and wanted to keep the original report line. But he said reorganization is consistent to our company strategy which decided by our leadership. He said sorry to me and confirmed nothing will be changed. I failed, but I think I should be more positive. Future will be better.
