Travel safely!

Vocabulary

Stay vs. Live – short or long
e.g. He’s staying at the hotel on Panyu Road.
e.g. He lives in Chicago.

Charger – a cord you use to plug your phone or computer into a source of power
e.g. You can’t use an iPhone charger with a Samsung phone.

Advice vs. Tips – advice is more general; tips are about specific things
e.g. Let me give you some advice: don’t go out late at night in dark areas you don’t recognize.
e.g. Let me give you a tip: you can find good places to eat by looking for families and old people. Families know which places are cheap; old people know which places taste good.

Hypothetical – something which hasn’t happened, but could
e.g. If it rains…
e.g. I would go if I had more money.

Grammar

Where does he stay in Shanghai?
— This is grammatically correct, but the meaning is wrong. This shows repeated action.
Instead, use: where is he staying in Shanghai? (right now)

More or most:
Some words use “-er” instead of “more.”
e.g. Bigger, faster, stronger
But not: virtuous, serious; difficult
Same with “-est” and “most”
e.g. Biggest, strongest, fastest
e.g. most difficult

Thanks very very much – thank you very very much
— “Thanks” is usually used by itself, or as “thanks a lot.”
— For a longer phrase, use “thank you” (thank you very much)

Appreciate – appreciative

Airport – be careful with “r,” which is a mouth shape vs. “l” which is a tongue movement
— For “r,” tighten the corners of your mouth and raise your tongue a little
