Vocabulary

“Man in Chair” – this is a character in the musical “The Drowsy Chaperone,” who apparently doesn’t have a name. Sometimes a character won’t have a name because they are meant to be a symbol, or to represent the audience (the person watching the play).

Audience – 观众, the people who are watching something, like a movie in a movie theater, a play, a musical, a concert
e.g. When she made a good joke, the whole audience laughed.

e.g. The Statue of Liberty is not just a statute, but a symbol of freedom for people arriving in New York.

Drowsy – someone who is tired, maybe who is falling asleep while trying to stay awake
e.g. I have history class after lunch, and I sit in the warm Sun and feel very drowsy. I don’t learn much in that class.

Chaperone – an older person who goes somewhere with younger people to make sure that they don’t do anything bad, that they behave
e.g. The students went on a class trip to Chongming island, and four chaperones went with them to make sure that didn’t get into any trouble.

The Fourth Wall – on stage, there are three sides without any audience (the sides and the back), but the fourth is open to the audience. Usually, the actors act as if that really were a wall (they don’t talk to the audience or look at the audience, or walk around in the audience)

e.g. In the Drowsy Chaperone, the “Man in Chair” regularly talks to the audience, breaking the fourth wall.

Make up (verb) – after two people have a fight, to try to fix the bad feelings between them, 调和
e.g. Jerry and George had a big fight and didn’t talk for a whole week. However, they were able to make up this weekend and are good friends again like before.

Look like – when two things appear the same though they are different, 看起来像
— “look” is the verb, and “like” is used to compare one thing to another specific
e.g. He needs to look old for this play. (with an adjective, no need to use “like”)
e.g. He needs to look like an old man for this play. (with a noun, use “like” to show that we are comparing two things)
e.g. They need to look like Europeans.

Period (adjective) – coming from a certain time
e.g. This is a period dress, coming from the 1920’s in the United States.

Speaking exercise

I will go to a musical play to help them make up. I don’t know the details of the play. I just know it’s from a Broadway musical called “The Drowsy Chaperone.” I need to make them to like Europeans, and we need to make the other hair like some red or white hair to make it curly and put on the actors’ head. We need to make up them have more hair nose and bigger eyes and the more white face, white skin, to make them more like Europeans. And then we need to make the history costume like 20 centuries of Europe.
