Needs more review

Popsicle – frozen flavored water on a stick; the name comes from the words “lollipop” (candy on a stick) and “icicle” which is dripping water that freezes into a pointy shape

Vocabulary

Business is Booming – things are going very well; you are selling a lot of whatever it is that you sell
e.g. We have lots of new students these days. Business is booming!

Portmanteau – (say it like: port – man – toe) a word made from parts of other words, like “popsicle”

Documentary – a movie that tells you about something that really happened and tries to tell it exactly as it happened; it explains something, just the facts
e.g. I watched a documentary about a man who climbed a very dangerous mountain without any ropes.

Biopic – (this is a portmanteau, from the words “biography” and “picture”) a movie that the story of someone, but maybe not exactly as it happened; it might be more dramatic than real life was
e.g. Bohemian Rhapsody changed some of the dates and some of the problems that the band faced, but was telling the story of Freddie Mercury.

Drama – a story that focuses on people’s relationships and which is probably not real

Heard of – to know that something exists
Heard – to listen to or notice using your ears
e.g. I have heard of Queen, but I have not heard their music.

Thesis / Dissertation – the paper you write to graduate as a Master’s / Doctoral student
e.g. Nick is trying to finish his thesis right now.
e.g. Nick does not want to write a dissertation right now.

Astrophysicist – someone who studies outer space
e.g. Brian May, the guitarist of Queen, eventually became an astrophysicist in 2007.

Vocalist – someone who sings
e.g. Freddie Mercury is one of the most famous rock vocalists in history.

Wave your hands vs. wave your hands in the air – “in the air” means that you are putting them up over your head, like at a rock concert

Electrify – to make you feel so excited that you are shaking like someone touched you with an electrical cable
e.g. I have even considered watching Bohemian Rhapsody a third time because it is so electrifying to see the performance and hear the music in the cinema.

Grammar

High degree vs. Advanced Degree – “high” means “a lot”; something we are measuring
e.g. There is a high degree of pollution in larger cities (the air in the cities is more polluted than elsewhere)
— “advanced” means more difficult or further along in some process
e.g. Brian May has an advanced degree in astrophysics.
e.g. He has an advanced degree of dementia (he is old and his brain is really not working well anymore)

Speaking exercise

Last Sunday I watched a movie. The movie talked about Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody). I have heard Queen, but this is my first time to know about them, especially the vocal singer. They are unique and special, and I know they all got the high degree. While I watching the movie, I wanted to stand and wave my hands.


Last Sunday I watched a movie. The movie talked about (documentary) / was about (biopic, drama) Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody). I have heard of Queen / heard Queen’s music before, but this is my first time to know really learn something / a lot about them, especially the vocalistlead singer. They are unique and special, and I know they all got the high advanced degrees. While I watching the movie, I wanted to stand and wave my hands in the air.
