Watch a soccer highlight video and be ready to talk about it.
How do they describe what is happening?

Vocabulary

Thumb – the big, short finger you use to hold things

Beat – in soccer, to get the ball past a defender
e.g. With a very nice move, he beat the defender and shot the ball.

Shoot vs. Score – shoot is to kick the ball towards the goal; to put the ball in the goal and score a point
e.g. He shot the ball, but goalie was able to catch it.
e.g. He shot the ball and scored when the goalie wasn’t able to stop it.

Corner (kick) – when the ball goes out from the goal line (on a side with a goal) and it is kicked back in from the corner
Throw in – when the ball goes out on the side, the touch line, and someone is allowed to throw it back into the game
e.g. Let Mark take the throw in.
e.g. The referee has given the throw in to the Fire.
e.g. I will throw it in.

e.g. He broke his foot when he fall out of the window.

— The third form is used with “have” and “had,” and also as an adjective.

— What you’re doing or who you are

— Subject is what is doing the action.

Speaking exercise

My thumb isn’t broke, but my thumb hit a football, because I was a keeper. I wanted to catch a ball, but my thumb hit the ball. It’s hard. One player from another team shooted the ball, and I wanted to catch the ball, but my right thumb hit the ball. I felt very very hard. He was on my right. He passed through/across my teammate. My teammates was defending him, but he passed them.
