Next Class Focus

Finish the speaking from last time and check the homework. If there’s time, do more speaking practice.

Homework

Read the business email pages and write a business letter related to your work (not actual stuff, but something similar).

Vocabulary

-er/-ist – these are endings for words to show that they describe someone who does something
e.g. Writer = write + er
e.g. Pianist = Piano + ist
HOWEVR, some words have different noun forms.
e.g. Cook + ???? = Chef or Cook! vs. Cook rice + er = Rice Cooker (machine for cooking rice)
-ist only to applies to people.

Nevertheless – however, but, though

Bet – when you try to decide what will happen in the future and get something if you’re right; or, you try not to do something, and have to pay if you do anyway
e.g. I bet on the Bulls (Chicago basketball team) to win the championship, but I lost.
e.g. I bet my brother that I wouldn’t drink coffee for a week, but I couldn’t stop. So I had to pay him $10.

– an ellipsis, which shows a sentence which doesn’t really end, or when you say you believe something when you don’t, or when something goes exactly the way you hoped it wouldn’t
e.g. I was thinking about what we could do…
e.g. Yeah, I bet you DID go there… (I don’t believe it!)
e.g. I said I wouldn’t cry… but I did.

Grammar

Although / but – these both show that something is different than what we had hoped for or thought, but they go in different parts of the sentence.
e.g. Although we had planned to go camping, it rained.
e.g. We had planned to go camping, but it rained.
— Although goes by the “expected” part of the sentence, and but goes by the “surprise.”

Because / so – similar to although and but
e.g. Because he wanted me to sing, I sang.
e.g. He wanted me to sing, so I sang.
— Because gives the reason, so shows the result.

In both cases, you can only use one of the pair in a sentence. The one you choose is the one that is more important.

Speaking exercise

Finish from last time:

sang a song for him, and I didn’t tell him before, although he asked me to sing a song for him, but I told him it was impossible for me to do like that. So when I started to sing, he was moved.

sang a song for him, but I didn’t tell him before. Although he had asked me to sing a song for him, but I told him it was impossible for me to do like that. So when I started to sing, he was moved.

New speaking:

Before the wedding we had a dadu (we said who cry in our wedding who lose the game). We think a wedding is full of happiness, so we don’t want to cry in our wedding. But I cried. And we said who cried in our wedding who is the (loser). After this part I changed my dressing, and started another part. We invited our parents to the stage and then I gave the cup of tea to his parents, and he did it exchange. We started to call (duifang) the other person’s parents Dad and Mom, so this is the yishi, the most important part of our wedding, and also in Chinese traditional wedding.
