F2F Class Notes (Nick) [S]

Homework

Write that 红烧肉 recipe!

Vocabulary

Much vs. A lot – “much” is more formal than “a lot,” and much seems to have more specific phrases that it is used in; “a lot” cannot be an adjective.
e.g. Too much (can’t use “a lot”)
e.g. Much of my time was spent doing reports (like “most”) (can use “a lot”)
e.g. I slept a lot (“much” is possible, but sounds strangely formal)

Suitable – to have the right characteristics for some purpose
e.g. This coat is suitable for camping because it is light and waterproof.

Shop vs. Buy
— “Shop” can be a general verb, meaning to go looking for something to buy. If you want to describe what you are looking for, you should use “for.”
— “Buy” means to exchange money for something else.

Or else! – if you don’t do something, or you keep doing something that you shouldn’t, someone is going to punish you (自找麻烦/死路)
e.g. Do it! Or else!

Grammar

Clothes is a “mass noun,” which means that it has no plural form. It refers to some amount without saying how much.
There is no form “clotheses”
— Also, clothes includes anything you can wear, made out of plant fiber or animal skin.
e.g. I went to the store to buy some clothes (maybe just some socks, or maybe seven coats)
To talk about how many, you should use the measure word “articles” or “pieces” and the word “clothing.”
e.g. I bought three pieces of clothing today.

Speaking exercise

slept a lot. It’s raining outside and it’s suitable for sleeping. I hang out with my friends and shopped several clotheses and pants. We have dinner together. Then went home. (What else?) No else! I got here by subway. It took about one hour from my home to here.
