Vocabulary

Competence – the ability to do something well.
e.g. He has competence in programming and languages.

Grammar

With vs. Between – “with” is usually about different things or people working together; “between” might be like with, connecting two people for some purpose, or only inside of some group
e.g. I will go with you to the store (two different people)
e.g. We need someone to act as a go-between for the discussions (the people involved in the discussions are like a single group)
e.g. The talks will be happening between the US and China (the talks make these two separate countries like one group)

When to use “of” with adjectives?
— You should usually put an adjective right in front of the word it describes:
e.g. The red car (not: the car of red)
e.g. The big car (not: the car of big)
— You use “of” to make it clearer that something is made from something else
e.g. wooden table; table of wood (both ok!)
— Sometimes, especially when a word has two meanings, you need to choose:
e.g. Quality standards vs. standards of quality
— The first might mean that we need “standards that are good,” standards that achieve some goal. It could also mean that we have any standard for choosing. The second means only that we have some standards that help us to choose something that works well.
e.g. To teach at SmartEnglish, you must speak English.
— This is a “standard of quality,” because it doesn’t allow anyone who doesn’t speak English to teach. But, it is not a “quality standard,” because it is a very bad standard. It would allow many unqualified teachers to teach here! (By the way, this is not our standard.)

When writing, use commas ( , ) for lists of three or more things.
e.g. I went to the park and the store.
e.g. I bought apples, oranges, and cherries.
e.g. I bought stinky tofu and peppers and a soda (this is only two things, because “stinky tofu and peppers” is only one dish that I order).
