F2F Class Notes (Nick)

Homework

Try to write a conversation where you call the host because of a problem with the shower. There is not enough water coming out.
Or, try to write about the lights not working in the bedroom.

Vocabulary

Round up – to not accept return change for your payment; to find some things that escaped, or to gather some things together.
e.g. Let’s just round the bill up from $42.26 to $45 so that we can divide it by three.
e.g. I need to round up some stuff to fix my chair.

Sink – the place in a kitchen or bathroom where you can wash your hands or face

Thug – someone who uses force to get what they want
e.g. As I turned onto a dark road, a thug came out of the shadows and robbed me.

AirBnB
BnB – “bed and breakfast”; a more informal place to stay than a hotel

Hello, this is Sunny. My English is not so good, so please speak slowly. We have arrived at [airport/metro station]. When can we meet with you to get the key?

Hello, we would like to report a problem with [thing]. Could you please send someone to fix it?

Hello, this is Sunny. We are leaving the apartment now. We have left the key in [place] OR we have given the key to [person].

I’m sorry / Pardon me, could you speak slower? [What?]

Meet you vs. Meet with you
— “meet you” means my purpose is to meet you
— “meet with you” means that we need to be in the same place to do something together

Grammar

Splitting the infinitive – “to swim” “to eat” “to climb”
— When you want to describe a verb in the infinitive, you should put the adverb either before “to” or after the verb. You shouldn’t put it between “to” and the verb (a grammar book would say this).
— Nick’s rule: you can totally do this. In fact, it is the clearest form.
e.g. I want not to accept your tip (grammar book)
e.g. I want to not accept your tip (nick rule)
