F2F Class Notes (Nick)

Homework

Do some writing and focus on the grammar you learned in class today.

Work on making complete sentences and using the proper verb tense (past, present, future). Use the article Nemo gave you; give a summary of the most important points.
A complete sentence is one with a person, and a verb, and some description:
e.g. I took a walk (today, with Jesse, to the mall, etc.)

Vocabulary

Visually impaired – the first is about a person’s ability, if a person can see; the second is about whether

Arrange – to put something some order
e.g. We arranged the chairs in a circle.

Freshman, Sophomore (Sof-more), Junior, Senior – what the four years of high school and college are called

School levels (in the US):
Preschool – 3-4 years old
Elementary School – Kindergarten, grades 1-5 (maybe 6) years 5-11 (12)
Middle School – grades 7-8   ///   Junior High School – 6-8 years 11 – 13
High School – 9 – 12 years 14 – 18
College – a more general term, which could be either 2 or 4 years, but usually means the same as “university”
University (undergraduate) – always four years
Graduate – studies after the first four years (includes Master’s, Doctoral, some professional degrees – law, medicine)

Grammar

Visually impaired vs. “eye impaired” – you say that a person is visually impaired, because they do not have the ability to see; when something doesn’t work properly, you can say that it is impaired
e.g. He can only see ten feet away; he is visually-impaired.
e.g. His eyesight is impaired; he can only see ten feet away.

My English (skill) has improved little vs. a little –
The first means that it has not gotten much better; it hasn’t improved
The second means that there has been some improvement, but it just isn’t going very quickly
