F2F Class Notes (Nick) [S]

Homework

Write about your second week at work. What are your colleagues like? Use have vs. get.

Vocabulary

Have vs. Get – what you “have” is now; what you got was recently
e.g. I have a bottle of gum (I’m not saying when I got it)
e.g. I got a bottle of gum today (I just bought it today)

Essay – something you write, explaining, convince, etc. 作文
e.g. For homework, our teacher told us to write an essay on Mao’s unified front theory.

Mid-size vs. Medium – mid-size is used for big things, medium for small things
e.g. Mid-size car, mid-size company, mid-size house
e.g. This shirt/coffee/order of fries is medium.
Middle – something which is between other things, by location or by order
e.g. Middle school (after primary school, but before high school; order)
e.g. Our house was in the middle of the street (not at the end, near an intersection, but between the other houses; location)

Order – 次序, first second third…

Like/Don’t Like About – one thing you (don’t) like about something
e.g. This is a nice house, but what I don’t like is how small the bathroom is (I like the house, just not the bathroom)

Curse – a little stronger than “swear at,” and probably about the person, not just what they did
e.g. I cursed him out because of how he treats his employees.

Grammar

If you want to add a description which is not necessary to the sentence, you can attach it with a comma ( , )
e.g. I do futures purchasing for pp, a kind of plastic.
e.g. Every year Chicago has a large event called Lollapalooza, a music festival.
— This only works when the description follows the word you want to describe.
e.g. Lollapalooza, a music festival held in Chicago, happens on the first weekend in August.

Speaking exercise

I had a new job and last week is the first week of the job.  The company is an e-commerce platform of chemicals and plastic. What I do is futures purchasing, and purchase pp, it’s a kind of plastic.  (How big is it?) It’s a middle company. What I don’t like the company is the boss. He likes to swear people, and he likes to say dirty sentence to them. But he only swears to higher-level, such as managers. I just heard about this from other employees, and I think the environment of the office is not very fine. The office is not bright. The office doesn’t have many sunshine and the air is not well.

(How big is it?) It’s a mid-size company. What I don’t like about the company is the boss. He likes to swear at people, (and he likes to say bad words to them.) But he only swears at higher-level staff, such as managers. I just heard about this from other employees. Also, I think the environment of the office is not very nice. The office is not bright. The office doesn’t have any sunshine and the air is not fresh.
