Homework

Use some of the vocabulary from today in some writing. Choose a topic that lets you use the words we learned.

Talk about arrogance, confidence, etc.

Vocabulary

Persevere – to continue working after something bad happens; to keep trying (twice, three times, four times…)
e.g. The most successful people are not those who have never failed, but those who persevere.

Climb the (corporate) ladder / work up – to get promotions over time because of good performance and long experience
e.g. Jack has worked at McDonald’s for years. He started as a cook and he has climbed the ladder all the way up to management.
e.g. Jack started as a cook, and worked up to management.
e.g. Jack works hard every day climbing up the ladder at his company.

Boom – the sound of an explosion; to show a change, maybe a surprising one, but something that happens suddenly
e.g. I was walking down the street, when – BOOM – a guy was hit by a bus.
e.g. I spent hours thinking about how to fix the problem, when – boom – I figured it out!
— This word can be used in writing, but is informal. It is mostly just a noise used for emphasis.

Arrogant – when you believe you are so good that everyone else must pay attention to you, listen to you, and will be harmed if they don’t (negative)
Humble
– when you are well qualified, but you don’t need to tell everyone (positive)
Confident – being well qualified, showing it, but not being annoying (positive)

The Earth will stop turning
Rotation
– this is the science term to describe the turning of a planet (or any other thing)

Grammar

Older people / elders – “older people” is a way of avoiding saying that someone is “old”
— To say that someone is “old” is to remind them that they are not cool, that they are not current, that they will die
— To say that someone is an “elder” is to say that they have experience and authority
— If you just want to say that the person is older than you, you can call them an “older person,” or “older people”

When I think my past time, I realize my mistakes are in arrogant – When I think about my past time, I realize my mistakes come from arrogance.
