F2F Class Notes (Nick)

Find a few minutes of a podcast, show, or movie which has some difficult vocabulary or grammar and bring it to class. We can work together to understand it better.

Vocabulary

Rule – (formal) something that you must do or not do; (informal, generally)

Trying to translate “改善”

Prevent – to fully stop something from happening
e.g. I saw the man about to walk in front of a car, and I grabbed him, preventing his injury. (He was not hurt at all.)
Mitigate – to make something less harmful, or less bad in some way
e.g. Since we knew the storm was coming, we were able to prepare our house and mitigate the damage caused.
Ameliorate – (advanced) to make something better, especially when it has recently become bad
e.g. To ameliorate the effects of losing your job, I suggest that you find part-time work.

Podcast – news, radio, talk shows recorded
e.g. I listen to a podcast about English.
