Vocabulary
Play – a story for performing; a dramatic work
e.g. Michael will see a play about the history of Shanghai.
Musical – a play in which main parts are sung instead of spoken
e.g. The Wizard of Oz is a famous American musical.
Adaptation – turning a form of art into another form
e.g. The play that Michael will go see is adapted from the novel.
Playwright – someone who writes plays
e.g. Shakespeare is a famous playwright.
Dialect – a version of a language
Perform – to act out a play, or musical
e.g. The play will be performed in Shanghai dialect.
Prohibition – what you are forbidden from doing
e.g. The 90’s was an era of the breaking of old prohibitions.
Accessible – easy to understand or to use
e.g. In the 90’s, the pop culture of Hong Kong and Taiwan were more accessible to Shanghai audiences than Western culture.

Transformation – the noun related to transform
Comedy – a comic play
Crosstalk – comic dialogue; 相声
Expressions – “gestures” with your face
e.g. In Crosstalk, gestures and expressions help to add humor to the dialogue.
Buffoon – a silly person
e.g. Usually, crosstalk has one buffoon and one “straight” man (serious).
Pipe – something that carries water or gas
e.g. If your water pipes are leaking, you must get them repaired.
Slapstick – exaggerated, physical comedy
e.g. The Three Stooges are a comedy team famous for slapstick.
