Review the difference between adjective pairs with “-ed” and “-ing”:
Embarrassed, embarrassing
Annoyed, annoying
Bored, boring
Etc.
Vocabulary
Cumbersome synonyms: heavy, awkward, inconvenient, hard to manage
Variety vs. Various
— “Variety” means many different kinds, each with a particular use or color or other quality; emphasizes the difference
— “Various” just means many of one thing; emphasizes the similarity
Tablet – like an iPad, a computer that is smaller than a laptop and bigger than a phone
Insulated – a bottle (or something else) that can keep something hot or cold (for a bottle: a thermos); something that resists the transfer of energy
e.g. I have an 800ml insulated bottle / thermos that I sometimes make tea in.
Displace – for something to push another thing out of its place; to replace by “force” or “usage”
e.g. In Chinese, the laptop has displaced the notebook in using 笔记本, so now a notebook is just called a 本子.
Imply – to mean something without saying it directly
Indicate – to say something directly or draw attention to something
e.g. Since he indicated that he lives closer to the restaurant than the train station, I think he meant to imply that he would prefer to meet at the restaurant.
User-friendly – something that is very accessible, easy to learn to use, etc.
Grammar
A handwriting notebook – a handwritten notebook
— “Handwriting” implies that this is the purpose of notebook: to practice my handwriting
— “Handwritten” just means that that’s how I fill the notebook.
Can be friendly used – user-friendly
Most important is – most importantly / the most important thing is . . .
