Vocabulary

Fahrenheit – freezing at 32 and boiling at 212
Celsius – freezing at 0 and boiling at 100

Northeast -东北
— “North” and “south” always go before “east” and “west”
e.g. northwest, southwest, southeast

Shade – where the Sun doesn’t hit you directly
e.g. Come over here into the shade of this tree and you won’t feel so hot.
Shine – for something to create light (usually the Sun or other stars)
e.g. Walking along the road, the Sun was shining directly on our heads and we got sunburned.

Sunburn – 晒伤

厉害 – good, cool, nice, awesome

Article – a short (usually) piece of writing in a newspaper, magazine, or academic journal
Journal – 杂志
Academic – 学术

Collection – many things all together; specifically a book that has many shorter pieces in it
Short Story Collection – 短篇小说集/短篇故事会

In print – if someone is still making a book, if they are still printing copies
— The opposite is “out of print”
e.g. I had a short story collection that I loved to read as a kid, but I don’t know if it is still in print now. I guess it is probably out of print.

Hobby – something you do in your free time because you like doing it
e.g. My favorite hobby is playing my trumpet.
Habit – something you do without thinking about it just because you have done it so many times
e.g. I have a habit of going to the dining hall/canteen (食堂) in the morning and ordering a 青椒鸡蛋饼.

Trumpet – 小号

Dormitory – a place where a lot of students all live together, usually sharing rooms and bathrooms 宿舍

Annual – every year

Accent – the way that you pronounce a language
e.g. Sometimes I have to listen extra carefully to what my boss is saying because he is Japanese and speaks English with a Japanese accent.

Promote – to give someone a better position in a company
Improve – to make something better

Grammar
