Vocabulary

First vs. At First – order of things; to tell someone what you thought 以为
e.g. First, I need to obtain a visa. Then, I need to have a long vacation. Then, I will be able to go to the US.
e.g. At first, I thought he was nice. But then I heard how he was talking to the waiter, and I realized that he was not nice at all.

Recommend – to tell someone what you think they should do 推荐 (the noun is recommendation)
e.g. Do you have any recommendations for where we should go to eat? I would recommend a hotpot place near here.

Sunset (noun) – when the Sun goes down and night begins
e.g. The Sun sets very late in Urumqi.

Time Zone – when the time changes as you move East or West
e.g. The Continental US (no Alaska or Hawaii) has four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific

Continent – a large area of land 州
Continental US – 48 states in the US that are all together (not Alaska or Hawaii)

State – this is what the provinces are called in the United States (America)
e.g. Alaska is our largest state, though it is not the most famous!

Horizon – the edge of the Earth, as far as you can see before it curves away 地平线

— “To be” is about how something seems, not about what you do
e.g. I am short; I am hungry; I am American
— “Didn’t” is something that didn’t happen and cannot happen (the time has passed; no more possibility)
e.g. I didn’t eat lunch (and now it is too late, because if I eat now it will be dinner)
— “Haven’t” means you didn’t do it, but you still could; still possible
e.g. I haven’t bought the book yet (but tomorrow I might).
