F2F Class Notes (Nick)

Homework

Write about going to lunch. Talk about the canteen, the other staff who eat there, etc. Try to use “that” and “which” to add description (don’t use what for this purpose!)

Vocabulary

Each day is like another day – Every day is the same / Each day is like the one before
— When you another, I wonder “which one?” But if all the days all the same as the one before, they are all the same.

Deli / Sandwich Shop – a store that serves salads, soups, and sandwiches (very common places for lunch in the US) 三明治店
e.g. I went to the deli to get a sandwich for lunch.

Business Supplies (School Supplies) Company – paper, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, paperclips

(Staff) Cafeteria / Canteen / Dining Hall – a place for large groups to eat, usually fairly cheap, often found in companies and at universities
e.g. I eat lunch in the dining hall every day for only Y10!

Emphasis / Stress – part of word or sentence that you say louder, longer, or higher in tone than another part
e.g. The stress in “cafeteria” is on “te.”

Staff – all the people that work at a company, in the government, etc.
— Staff is a noun that refers to a group, not someone particular (You cannot add an “s”: staffs); uncountable
e.g. We have a large staff. (Many people work here.)

Grammar

It’s the career what you really want to do – It’s the career that you really want (to do)
— To add extra information, you should use “that” or “which”
— This is different from Chinese, where you can “什么”; in English you cannot connect the parts of the sentence with “what”
— “What” can only be used as a question or as a subject
e.g. What do you want?
e.g. This is what I want!

There is a place in our company only for staffs – There is a place in our company only for staff.
