I think bribing culture in China is common. In my company – I think we need to distinguish between a bribing culture and human nature. For eg I sent a gift to my leader to express my thanks – I think it is not bribing I don’t think this is bribing. Although the price is expensive , it is within I can bear my budget, and you know Chinese people are keen on saving face – we will not buy cheap things – as a present to for others – In my company I listened to a story from my colleague – except executives in the finance department will face more bribery from other departments – the financial managers, directly told the customer – he had no money to repair his car, and when they play majaing together the customer immediately understood what he means meant – he paid the bill to repair his car and gave maybe 50,000 RMB cash to him – really. My company is construction – in the construction industry it is common/This is common for the construction industry – if the project manager wants money he will talk to the subcontract managers and they will sign a purchase contract and they will take money from it. That is what I know about bribing culture.

It is common so we will not think it is strange its cultural. I have been working in state owned enterprises, in this industry which are not the main income, bonus and grey income are most important income (P)/In SOE “grey” income and bonuses are more important than your salary (main income). For the ordinary employees their annual salary are is not much but the most positions and powered departments their grey income are more than ordinary employees. Even the grey income of powerful departments is greater than the salary of ordinary employees.

In the state owned enterprise your skills and abilities is are not the main point that you can promote – if you are woman – or if you are good at drinking or “sucking up” to leaders  or sleeping with leaderships – you will be quickly promoted.
