F2F Class Notes (Nicholas) [S]

Next Class Focus

Sarah is taking a test next week based on topics — a conversation-based exam. She has her list of topics. I suggested choosing a new topic (this class we chose “free time activities”). Below are the the 3 biggest problem areas that need correcting:

Working on pronunciation of TH words

e.g. the, this. Focusing on THis, not DIS.

Eliminating +ING to verbs when not necessary.

e.g. “When I am speaking in English.” vs. “When I speak English.”

Adding +S to words when plural.

e.g. “I watch TV show vs. I watch TV shows.

Pronunciation

Celebrity = pronounced SUH-LEB-BRITY

Say = pronounced SAY/SAE, not SEH. Your pronunciation is too short, make it longer.

Is = pronounced not “EES”; pronounced IS . You pronounce it like the word “EASY” vs. the correct pronunciation which is shorter “IZ”

This = DIS vs. THIS

Vocabulary

Host: similar to an “MC”; can be the person throwing the party and responsible for making sure guests have a good time, or the person that welcomes the audiences and provides conversation topics during TV talk shows/variety shows.

e.g. His nightly talkshow received huge ratings because people find him to be a charismatic host.
