A great show I participated as an assistant director staged in Shanghai on the first day of China’s National Day .My colleagues and I spent almost four months on that. The show was a literature and art gala for the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, also was my first project I directed. I was nervous and excited.

The gala was filled with singing, dancing , cheering, and fireworks started at 7 pm on the first day of holidays , it was a live broadcast on TV. There were two parts in the show:performance and video show about the celebration in Beijing that morning. As an assistant director, I had a mission of capturing some moments of celebration at Tian’anmen Square, and bringing this videos back to Shanghai in the afternoon for the show.

In the early morning of October 1, I flew to Beijing and arrived Tian’anmen Square before 8 am. Audiences who already arrived Tian’anmen Square and I had a lot of rules to follow for making sure that everything will be according to the plan of a live broadcast. In the first, all phones and cameras were sealed in a small black bag to ensure our experience the grand show through eyes, and not our screens. But my mate as a professional reporter and photographer, has the privilege of shooting. And then,I sat in one of the many square teams, each team had a leader with earphones ,he would issued orders to us.

The flag-raising ceremony was a beginning , a mass celebration kicked off following a grand military parade .That was a happy time. When the camera of live broadcast was closer, the leader quickly ordered to us : “everybody, put your hand up, say~cheer!” ” everybody, shake your hands, smile!”
We raised the flag in our hands very consistently, and cheered wildly, I thought that the camera must be full of smiles😂 I felt like that was too dramatic, a little stupid and embarrassing, but it’s interesting.😆

When the melody of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games sounded again, I cried and recalled the good times ten years ago.
As a Chinese, I was very excited and happy to see the changes of our motherland in these years. I love China,I heart China.

After the morning show in Beijing,I flew to Shanghai for the evening show. Before the gala started, I put on my earphones, dressed staff suits for working. My jobs is to ensure the programs will be according to the plan in the backstage, I need to listen to all the orders from the director through earphones anytime , watch everything about performers with my eyes, and manage the schedule of performance by my brain. This is a mission impossible, unfortunately I’m not Tom Cruise.

Audiences of the gala also need to turn off their phones to ensure the live broadcast be perfect. Everyone has a national flag in their hands. They need to cheer when the camera was closer. Hell ya, all the shows in China ,must be successful , enthusiastic and great, they are so similar.

In the beginning of the show, four soldiers took the national flag to the stage for the flag-raising ceremony, and then literature and art performance of 15 programs would be showed. Everything was good, and every audience’s face was filled with wild smile, maybe beautiful fake smile, but I was getting crazy. While I managed everything of backstage,my ears were full of the director’s nagging and orders. I felt like a busy Mom in the nightclub.

Until the end of the last program that was a sang named “Me and My Motherland” by the mayor and audience , I really released all of pressures. At the moment, with the beautiful melody, I recall all of today: I flight between Shanghai and Beijing one day, as if I had played “A Tale of Two Cities”. Although it was a hard day, I still felt happy, because I would get three times the salary for the overtime on holidays.
