Vocabulary

custom (n): 1-a way of behaving or a belief that has been established for a long time:
E.g.: a local/ancient custom
E.g.: In my country, it’s the custom (for women) to get married in white.

substantial (adj): 1-large in size, value, or importance:
E.g.: He took a substantial amount of money.
E.g.: They do a substantial portion of their business by phone.
E.g.: The findings show a substantial difference between the opinions of men and women.
E.g.: She inherited a substantial fortune from her grandmother.

make a (big) difference / make all the difference-to improve a situation (a lot):
E.g.: Exercise can make a big difference to your state of health.
E.g.: Putting up some new wallpaper has made all the difference to the place.

patriarchal (adj): 1-ruled or controlled by men:
E.g.: patriarchal structure
E.g.: Korean society is a a patriarchal society

patriarchy (n): 1-a society in which the oldest male is the leader of the family, or a society controlled by men in which they use their power to their own advantage:
E.g.: Patriarchy has not disappeared – it has merely changed form.
E.g.: She rails against patriarchy and hierarchy.

matriarchy (n): 1-a type of society in which women have most of the authority and power, or a society in which property belongs to women and is given to children by women rather than men

perceive (v): 1-to come to an opinion about something, or have a belief about something:
E.g.: How do the French perceive the British?
E.g.: Women’s magazines are often perceived to be superficial.

keep a low profile-to avoid attracting attention to yourself:
E.g.: He’s been in a little trouble recently so he’s trying to keep a low profile.

extended family-a family unit that includes grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, and uncles, etc. in addition to parents and children

your immediate family-your closest relations, such as your parents, children, husband, or wife

nuclear family-a social unit of two parents and their children:
E.g.: We average fewer than two children per nuclear family.
