Vocabulary

cull (v): When people cull animals, they kill them, especially the weaker members of a particular group of them, in order to reduce or limit their number.
（为减少或限制数量而对动物）选择性宰杀，剔除（尤指病弱动物）
E.g.: The plan to cull large numbers of baby seals has angered environmental groups.
选择性捕杀大量小海豹的计划引起了环保组织的强烈愤慨。

subsidy (n): money given as part of the cost of something, to help or encourage it to happen

subsidize (v): to pay part of the cost of something

staple (adj): basic or main; standard or regular

E.g.: The staple diet here is mutton, fish and boiled potatoes.

hint (n): something that you say or do that shows what you think or want, usually in a way that is not direct

E.g.: He’s dropped (= given) several hints to the boss that he’ll quit if he doesn’t get a promotion.

E.g.: Did she give you any hints about where she was going?

 promptly (adv): quickly, without delay, or at the arranged time
迅速地，立即地；依照预定时间地
E.g.: We’ll have to leave fairly promptly (= on time) if we want to catch that train.

E.g.: We try to answer readers’ letters as promptly (= quickly) as we can.

E.g.: She promised she’d keep it secret and promptly (= immediately after) went and told Dad!

censor (v): to remove anything offensive from books, films, etc., or to remove parts considered unsuitable from private letters, especially ones sent during war or from a prison
