Active/passive constructions; deliberate vs. situational agency

Arouse problems – arouse describes emotions, rather than events or things
e.g. Her actions aroused his anger.
Instead, use “cause,” “give rise to”
Caution: When used between people, it has a sexual connotation – e.g. he aroused her

Distinguish: Psychology, sociology, philosophy
Study of the mind, study of society, study of thought/fundamental thought

Distinguish: Social science and humanities
Using evidence to show a point vs. thought and perspectives of people, art

Vocabulary

Servant – cleaner, babysitter, maid/butler
Servant is correct, but sort of outdated; too strong. It implies a difference in class.
e.g. I hired a cleaner to help take care of the house.

Employ/employee/employer – verb/recipient (object)/agent (subject)
-er: does something; -ist: e.g. pianist – one who plays the piano
-ee: to whom something is done; receiver of an action

Filipino/a – people from the Philippines
Gender distinction – male: filipino; female – filipina

Plantation – a very large farm, especially one using slave labor
e.g. When in Georgia, we visited an old plantation.

Sovereignty – having the final control over a territory or people
e.g. China exercised its sovereignty over the old colonial buildings on the Bund.

Practical – something which has application to daily life; someone who worries about immediate issues and not abstract things
e.g. Engineering is a practical science because it creates housing and transportation, which improves. Philosophy is not because it produces only books (some say!).
e.g. She is a practical person, concerned with taking good care of her family.
