Read the wiki on the syrian war and one NYT article. write down any words you dont understand and google them.

Retreat – to back away; a trip with a purpose generally in a secluded area

Secluded – to be away from things; isolated

Bust – a failure of an event or idea
eg. Jack accidentally bought non-alcoholic beer, so bachelor party was a bust.

Blown away – to be very impressed
eg. I was blown away by the food in Japan

Proxy War – a war waged between two entities who are both being supported by other-usually larger-groups.

Homogenous – racially pure or almost pure (Japan, Korea, Scandanavia)

Wage (v) – to continue a war
eg. The US waged a war in Vietnam to contain the spread of communism

Containment – the US foreign policy enacted in the 1960’s/1970’s to stop the spread of communism

Genocide – mass killings (usually based on criteria such as race, religion, class)

There wasn’t a lot of working time – There wasn’t a lot of actual work
