Vocabulary

regulations: an official rule or law that says how something should be done

eg. The body’s regulation of blood pressure.

facility: something (such as a building or a large piece of equipment) that is built for a specific purpose

eg. That factory recently built a new manufacturing facility.

ride-hailing: the activity of asking a car or driver to come immediately and take you somewhere

eg. Smartphone ride-hailing has changed the face of public transport.

hail: to call someone in order to attract their attention

eg. Shall we hail a taxi?

hail (2): small hard balls of ice that fall from the sky like rain

empower: to give someone official authority or the freedom to do something

eg. We want to empower individuals to get the skills they need.

accelerate: to move faster; to gain speed

eg. The plane accelerated down the runway.

Self-driving cars

Adults may be making all the decisions about self-driving cars and their associated regulations, but Waymo believes kids should have a say in the blossoming technology.

That, Waymo announced today, is why it’s partnered with AAA to educate kids about autonomous vehicles and the technology. Not only do the kids get a chance to speak their mind about the technology, but Waymo brought in AAA School Safety Patrol members from a few states to witness how it works.

Members from Northern California, Nevada and Utah were all invited to Waymo’s closed-course facility to see how the cars react to various situations. The overarching partnership with AAA will seek to educate everyone about self-driving cars and to gain their trust. And Waymo says it thinks the youngsters can offer up a fresh take on the technology.
