What Made My Wife Upset?
On Monday night, I received my wifeā€™s message on wechat while I was playing football with my friends. She was very angry and upset because she found that our daughter, Amy had lied to us.
When I back to home, my wife was shouting at Amy and was gone to cry almost. I told her that she had to be more patient and not yell at her any more like that. My wife started to be angry with me.
OK, letā€™s start from the beginning.
Last week, Amy told us that she was the section monitor in Music in her class and would attend a singing contest as an accentor between with her class and other 5 classes of Grade One next Monday. Both of us were very happy about it. We bought a yellow dress for her as she demanded that she told us it was her music teacher asked for. We had asked her which song they would sing. She said that she forgot the name, but told us four lyrics. We were all looking forward to it.
Before dinner on Monday night, she told us her class won the contest and her teacher praised her. My wife and I were very excited and proud of her.
After I went to the football field, my wife talked about it with two neighbors who were Amyā€™s classmatesā€™ mothers on phone and got the truth: No a sing contest at all. She made up everything. My wife could not accept it and became very angry.
I felt very incredible and funny. It sounded very intact and logical of the sing contest and was unbelievable that a 6.5-year-old child made up.
ā€œWhy did you made up it?ā€ I asked her.
ā€œI want to get more of your favor and praiseā€¦ā€ after a long silence, she said with a very small voice.
ā€œOf course we all love you very much whether you win or not, you canā€™t lie anytime.ā€ I said.
I had to talk with my wife after Amy slept.

New research shows that it is bad for children to watch TV, tablet or mobile phone screens before bedtime. Researchers from the University of Colorado found that “screen time” before sleeping damages children’s health. The researchers looked at over 60 different studies on how screen time affects children. They said: “Of more than five dozen studies looking at children aged from 5 to 17 around the world, 90 per cent have found that more screen time is associated with delayed bedtime, fewer hours of sleep, and poorer sleep quality.” Screens are becoming smaller and smaller, so children can look at them in bed. More than 75 per cent of children in the study had some kind of screen in their bedroom.

Children need a lot more sleep than adults. Pre-school children need 10 to 13 hours, pre-teens should get between nine and 12 hours, and teenagers should be getting between eight and 10 hours a night. The researchers highlighted three main reasons how screens affect children’s sleep. First, the light from screens upsets a child’s body clock. The light from screens getting into children’s eyes before they sleep tricks their body into thinking it is still daytime. Second, children often watch videos of things that excite them or interest them. This keeps their brain active, so they take longer to sleep. Finally, when children are watching screens, they are not exercising. Children need physical activity to make them tired.
