Vocabulary

1.practice (verb)= 练习
ex: you need to practice the piano everyday.
ex: if you don’t understand the math materials, you need to practice more.
ex: you need to practice speaking English.

2. approach (noun)= way 方式
approach (verb)= 接近
ex: summer is approaching.
ex: you can approach him in a nice way.
ex: this is a good approach to learn English .

3. target (noun)= 目标
ex: my target this year is to lose 5 kg.
ex: my target this year is to get my driver’s license and go to my dream school.

4. being used= 被利用
ex: he likes to use me to help him with his English homework.

5. benefit (noun)= 利益
benefit (verb)= 取得利益
ex: I see no benefit in helping my dad with his translation.

6. chat=talk casually 闲聊
ex: I like to chat with my students.
ex: do you chat with your friends on the phone?

7. instead = 反而 代替
ex: I want Chinese food instead of Japanese food because I like to eat hot things.

8. get to do (verb) XX = 允许做XX
ex: you don’t get to eat on the subway
ex: I get to go to the washroom in between my classes.
ex: People don’t get to unleash their dogs in public.

9. curfew= 门禁 宵禁
ex: Krissa has a curfew, she must be home before 10pm.

10. might= maybe 50% 有可能
ex: I might fail my driving test and I might need to retake my classes.
ex: I might have time tonight, but I’m not sure.

2. Don’t ask if you can practice your English with us

This kind of transactional-like approach can simply make your target feel like they’re being used. Remember that foreigners in China can make good money giving simple conversation classes, so most will see no benefit in chatting with you simply so you can improve your English. Ask if they want to have a coffee or a drink sometime instead. You’ll still get to practice your English, but you might make a genuine friend, too!
