Vocabulary

Encounter – to run into (not collide), to go near something, to arrive at same time/same place
eg. Today I had a bad encounter with the police.
eg. Today I encountered a new English word that I didn’t know

Injury – to be hurt

Severe – very strong meaning for a bad situation/undesirable
eg. I had a severe injury and had to go to the hospital
eg. I met a severe traffic jam on my way to school/work

Serious – a personality mood that indicates they are not joking; a severe degree
eg. Are you serious. He’s not joking, he is very serious
eg. I’m seriously thinking about giving you a million dollars

Congestion – to much of something blocking the way to allow it to move normally
eg. My nose is very congested and I can’t breath
eg. There is so much traffic and the roads are congested
eg. The congestion at the port means the boats can’t dock on time

Substantial – a lot of../very long …
eg. Today there was really long delays because of …../Today there was substantial delays because of …..

Divert – to sent in a different direction or to a different location
eg. When there is a car accident, you can’t drive the normal way so you have to be diverted another way
eg. Because of the bad weather, we were diverted to another airport

Berthing – removing all the cargo on a vessel/boats/ship

Window – window on a building, a period of time which is set/scheduled (before hand) for something (range of time to do something)
eg. My window of time to attend/for my class is 7-740, otherwise I won’t be able to have class (i’ll miss the window).

Despite – ignoring the problem…, even though we had a problem…, although we had a problem….
eg. Despite the problem/bad thing/delays ….we will still finish on time/on target/within the given window/within the deadline

Beforehand & Afterward
eg. What will you do before the game? Beforehand I will exercise.
eg. Are free tonight? …. I’m going to dinner….. What about afterwards?


Yangshan parts have has been recently encountering serious congestion which results in substantial delays, as ships have to wait or divert when they can not make berthing windows.
