Write one sentence for each of the new phrases we learned today. (5 sentences in total)


Vocabulary

Thesaurus [Tha-sor-rus] – similar to a dictionary but allows you to look different words of same meaning (http://www.thesaurus.com/)

Synonyms – different words with the same or similar meaning

Commute – the travel between places (usually work and home)

Get by – to be able to continue/survive/be okay (usually a situation that is worse then the present)
eg. I couldn’t get by without eating my favorite foods once a week.
eg. I could get by with earning just 10,000 rmb a month
Get by with (survive with only having) -> I could get by with 1 meal a day/5 hours of sleep a night
Get by if (you could survive if …) -> I could get by if the weather was a little cooler

Blurt out – saying something without thinking (usually causing an awkward situation)
eg. He blurted out the wrong answer in class.
eg. He was in a bad mood and blurted out something he regretted.
eg. He wish he hadn’t blurted out the answer to the test/exam/question.
eg. I wish I hadn’t blurted out the words which made the situation

Fed up – tired/annoyed of something (any you want to to end or change)
eg. I am fed up with my employee calling in sick all the time.
eg. I’m fed up with my long commute to work everyday.

Can’t take it anymore – want something to stop thats happen to you (and you have allowed to happen)
eg. I want to lose weight, I can’t take it anymore.
eg. The baby was screaming all night, I can’t take it anymore.

Rack up – to collect/accumulate over time (often connected to winning or losing)
eg. I racked up a lot of debt by borrowing money from the bank/government for university.
eg. Young people rack up a lot of debt by borrowing money from loan sharks.

Loan shark- people or companies that easily loan money to people but except a lot of interest.

Interest – the % of money from your loan that you must pay back.
eg. The interest on my mortgage (house loan) is about 5%.

Gambling – betting money on something
