A notable part of celebrating Duanwu is making and eatingĀ zongziĀ with other family members. People traditionally wrap zongzi in leaves of bamboo, lotus or banana which give a special aroma and flavor to the sticky rice and fillings. Choices of fillings vary depending on regions. Northern regions in China prefer sweet or dessert-styled zongzi, with bean paste, dates and nuts as fillings. Southern regions in China prefer savory zongzi, with a variety of fillings including marinated pork belly, chicken, sausage and salted duck eggs.

Zongzi are considered as a symbol of luck, as the pronunciation of zong is very similar to the pronunciation of zhong (äø). This character has a positive connotation, often used in words such as äøå„– (winning a prize), ē§‘äø¾é«˜äø (scoring high on an exam).

TheĀ Duanwu Festival, also often known, especially in the West, as theĀ Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional holiday originating in China, occurring near theĀ summer solstice. It is also known asĀ Zhongxiao FestivalĀ (Chinese:Ā åæ åēƀ;Ā pinyin:Ā ZhōngxiĆ ojiĆ©), commemoratingĀ fealtyĀ andĀ filial piety. The festival now occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditionalĀ Chinese calendar, which is the source of the festival’s alternative name, theĀ Double Fifth Festival.[1]Ā The Chinese calendar isĀ lunisolar, so the date of the festival varies from year to year on theĀ Gregorian calendar. In 2016, it occurred on June 9; and in 2017, on May 30.
